Accessibility Statement
Our commitment to making this site accessible to everyone - including what we've done, what we know still needs work, and how to tell us about a problem.
Our commitment
This site exists to support disabled doctors. It would be a contradiction if it were not itself accessible. We are committed to making doctorswithdisabilities.co.uk accessible to people with disabilities, including those using screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification software, or other assistive technologies.
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA as a minimum, and Level AAA where practical.
What we have done
Colour and contrast
All body text meets WCAG AAA contrast requirements (7:1 minimum) against its background. Heading text meets at minimum AA (4.5:1). Meaning is never conveyed through colour alone.
Typography and readability
Base font size is 16px. Text can be resized to 200% without loss of content or functionality. Line length is capped at approximately 68 characters for comfortable reading.
Keyboard navigation
All interactive elements, links, buttons, dropdowns, and form fields, are keyboard accessible. Focus indicators are visible (gold outline). A skip-to-main-content link appears at the top of every page. Dropdown menus support arrow key navigation and close on Escape.
Screen reader support
All pages use semantic HTML with landmark roles
(header, main, nav,
footer). Decorative SVGs use
aria-hidden="true". Interactive elements have
aria-label or aria-labelledby attributes.
The current page is marked with aria-current="page".
Forms
Form fields have visible labels and clear error messages. Required
fields are marked visually and with
aria-required="true". Error messages use
role="alert" so they are announced to screen readers
immediately.
Mobile and responsive design
The site is built mobile-first. All content is available from 320px wide. Touch targets are a minimum of 44×44px. No horizontal scrolling is required on any standard viewport.
Video
The BMA video on the Hidden Disability page is hosted on YouTube, which provides automated captions. We recommend enabling captions if you are deaf or hard of hearing. The original is also available directly on the BMA website.
No tracking or analytics
This site does not use analytics software or tracking scripts. The only cookie set is a preference cookie to remember that you have seen the cookie notice. This has no accessibility impact.
AI rights advisor
The chat widget in the bottom-right corner of the homepage is fully keyboard accessible. It can be opened with Enter or Space, navigated with Tab, and closed with Escape. Suggested questions can be selected with Enter. Responses are announced to screen readers via an ARIA live region. The widget includes a visible disclaimer that it provides guidance only and is not legal advice. It does not store any messages.
Known issues
We are not aware of any content that creates a barrier to access. If you find something, please let us know and we will fix it as a priority.
No failures of WCAG 2.1 AA have been identified at time of last review. This statement will be updated if issues are identified or reported.
Limitations of this statement
This site has been built and tested by its author. We have not undergone a formal third-party accessibility audit. All reported accessibility issues will be investigated and addressed as a priority.
